A Seperate Peace Finny Essay Research Paper free essay sample
A Seperate Peace: Finny Essay, Research Paper Fictional character: FINNY Throughout the novel A Separate Peace there were two dominant characters. Possibly the most utile in the reading of the novel was the character of Phineas, besides known as Finny who supplies the qualities of a magnetic, athletic, and strong leader. Finny is the best friend of the novel # 8217 ; s chief character, Gene. By reading into the text and incorporating the facets of symbol and theme the reader is given a clear image of the novel through the character of Finny. Phineas is the best friend of Gene. In chapter four of the fresh Gene pushes Finny out of a tree and Finny interrupt his leg. Subconsciously, Finny knows how the accident occurred but is the type of individual who wants to believe that all of life is unworried, he hates to admit that a individual could really ache another. We see a great trade of this attitude when Finny invariably refers to WWII as something created by old fat work forces in order to maintain immature male childs from holding to much merriment. We will write a custom essay sample on A Seperate Peace Finny Essay Research Paper or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page After the accident at the tree Gene efforts to state Finny that it was him who caused the accident, but Finny refuses to believe Gene. Finny believes their friendly relationship is excessively and in no manner would either of them want to impair it. Because of these feelings the idea that Gene caused the accident is more annihilating to Finny, than the existent physical hurting. The changeless subject of Gene # 8217 ; s guilt provides the concluding for most of the development of the male child # 8217 ; s friendly relationship. It seems that shortly after the autumn the male child # 8217 ; s friendship becomes rooted more on unstable prevarications instead than solid truth. It is this anchoring that causes the reader to see the tree transform throughout the novel as a symbol for the male child # 8217 ; s friendly relationship. Aside from being the carrier of unbelievable emotional and physical hurting, Finny besides bears the personality that Gene does non. Finny is placed in the novel non merely for secret plan development but to open Gene to a portion of himself that is non seeable. Finny is an unbelievable jock, brave and really low, this is shown through his breakage of the ageless school swimming record and non desiring to flash is talent. Gene on the other manus is really studious, but non so much an jock or cubic decimeter eader like Finny. Through their friendly relationship every bit good as the fresh Gene discoveries clip for his surveies and allows Finny to speak him into leaping out of the tree. It is these qualities that make Finny a filler for Geneââ¬â¢s personality. Here, Finny is thought more of as a subject and symbol instead than a character, he provides the ground for guilt and symbolizes what Gene could be at his full potency. However, the lone manner for Gene to witness this for himself is Finny deceasing at the terminal of the novel, from complications with his inadvertent autumn. Due to Finnyââ¬â¢s many qualities needed by Gene, it is necessary for the interest of the reading that Finny dice in order for Gene to make his full potency as a complete character. Probably one of the more hidden chances of Finny and the novel is the association to Finny # 8217 ; s accident and the creative activity narrative from the Bible. Because Adam suffers from an act committed by Eve, Finny relates to Adam and Gene to Eve. Both histories trade with the subject of a autumn from flawlessness and the enduring of a symbol of immorality, in these instances the apple and broken leg. Gene was overcome by green-eyed monster with all of Finny # 8217 ; s endowments it was this emotion that caused him to fall into the enticement of destructing Finny. The same applies to Eve and her strong emotion of enticement that sinned her into savoring the out fruit. Both were looking for a solution to their tempting demands and still committed an act of evil knowing that it came with a effect. Finny # 8217 ; s relation to Eve helps to better explicate the character that Gene unwittingly needed to destruct. By antecedently cognizing the narrative of Adam and Eve the reader i s given insight to the feelings and emotions that the character of Finny possesses. Without Phineas in the novel, there would be no secret plan. His character plays off of Gene in order to explicate the ideas the reader must get to understand the significance of the narrative. A Sperate Peace would non incorporate a subject of friendly relationship nor a subject of adulthood if it were non for Finny # 8217 ; s character. Through the development and significance of Phineas the novel provides a clear image that without a hardy friendly relationship, one shingle can throw a individual off class yet let them to develop a sense of themself. 335

The Uber Controversy Essay Example For Students
The Uber Controversy Essay Uber has been experiencing lots of problems during its initiating years because of many complains received from the people who use this service. Uber is a huge company, but it has not yet met all required standards to lawfully operate in every city around the world especially in its original country The United States. This fast growing company provides services in small and big cities in more than 50 countries. Uber is an American ridesharing company built in a smartphone app founded in March 2009 by Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp. (Chokkattu, and Crook). This multibillion dollar company uses a smartphone app that connects riders with their partner drivers through its powerful smartphone app. In fact, multiple issues have been affecting Uber. Issues strike Uber every time they try to operate in different cities. The most significant problems affecting this company are regulations, safety and low business for taxi companies. As Uber has been operating for more than five years with no restrictions, different entities have joined together to help create regulatory laws against this company. We will write a custom essay on The Uber Controversy specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now The most consistent regulatory problem for this company is what they call ââ¬Å"surge pricing. â⬠The surge pricing enables Uber to raise the prices and overcharge their clients for services that are supposed to be regulated. For instance, a twenty dollar trip could be doubled or even tripled when the surge pricing is in effect. (Posner). Uber claims that the only reason they promote the surge pricing is to bring more drivers to the streets during rush hours, holidays, or special events. Some experts confirm that Uber does it for intentional purposes of increasing earnings more quickly. Many people have been affected by the surge pricing situation which has created lots of controversy among Uber users and competitor taxi companies. There has been a high volume of demands requesting Uber to stop the surge pricing, but these efforts have not worked. Therefore, Uber keeps charging its customers unnecessary higher fares. This is a very significant issue due to the simple fact that people feel they are being taken advantage of by the ridesharing company. Since other taxi companies cannot cover those high demands during peak hours, Uber takes advantage of that and makes more money. This issue is creating a monopoly environment in this particular service area. Regulations are not the only problem Uber is currently facing; there are areas that the company must to improve in order to fully satisfy people. Safety is another major issue affecting this international company. Uber is a company that needs to improve their safety department due to some controversial issues that have occurred since its beginning. A lot of sex abuse, sexual harassment and kidnapping cases are increasingly affecting Uberââ¬â¢s image. Some of these cases could have easily been avoided by conducting more extensive background checks at the time of hire. Seeing that Uber does not require its partners to go through a fingerprint process, almost anyone can work for them. It is highly dangerous to hire these kind of individuals to perform this delicate job. Another major safety issue that Uber faces has to do with their insurance. According to a recent online article. ââ¬Å"An Uber driver in San Francisco struck and killed a 6-year-old on New Yearââ¬â¢s Eve 2013, but the $1 million insurance didnââ¬â¢t kick in because the driver didnââ¬â¢t have an uber fare at the time of the accidentâ⬠(Picchi). These few examples can prove that Uber does not provide its clients with a highly secure system as they state. For instance, a better and well developed safety system must be created in exchange of a safer service. Even though this is a major issue, it is not the most significant problem to be highlighted regarding Uber. Low business for other companies represents the most important problem. It is important to emphasize that Uber is almost everywhere which automatically gives the company a huge advantage compared to other taxi companies. .u3982155691114def683be8bfaaf79225 , .u3982155691114def683be8bfaaf79225 .postImageUrl , .u3982155691114def683be8bfaaf79225 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u3982155691114def683be8bfaaf79225 , .u3982155691114def683be8bfaaf79225:hover , .u3982155691114def683be8bfaaf79225:visited , .u3982155691114def683be8bfaaf79225:active { border:0!important; } .u3982155691114def683be8bfaaf79225 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u3982155691114def683be8bfaaf79225 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u3982155691114def683be8bfaaf79225:active , .u3982155691114def683be8bfaaf79225:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u3982155691114def683be8bfaaf79225 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u3982155691114def683be8bfaaf79225 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u3982155691114def683be8bfaaf79225 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u3982155691114def683be8bfaaf79225 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u3982155691114def683be8bfaaf79225:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u3982155691114def683be8bfaaf79225 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u3982155691114def683be8bfaaf79225 .u3982155691114def683be8bfaaf79225-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u3982155691114def683be8bfaaf79225:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Existentialism in Dead Poets Society EssayThis situation affects long established taxi companies that have been providing service for many years before Uber. Due to the high operational cost, some taxi companies are disappearing. On the other hand, Uber increases its revenues every year because of its low operational cost. (Friedman). For example, Uber drivers do not have taxi licenses nor do they have taxi registered cars, this enables them to operate with smaller budgets and create greater profits. They do not require commercial insurance to their partner drivers that in fact is highly dangerous and less expensive. This allows Uber to create an image of a cheap service when in reality it is not. Because of this situation most of those companies are disappearing affecting economy in many different ways. Lawmakers are trying to interfere in the case, but until some kind of agreement is created regular taxi companies will continue to be affected by the decrease of business in multiple cities around the world. Uber has found some ways to overcome its numerous obstacles and continue providing an improper service. Starting with the regulations that need to be implemented in order convert the company into a legit one. Followed by the safety issues that need to be taken care of, so Uber users ride more confident and safe. Lastly, it is highly necessary to create laws in order to prevent Uber from creating a monopoly in the different cities around the world where they operate. For Uber to increase its acceptance across the different cities in the globe, the company will have to take care of all those problem ruining its image and good standing. MacIntyre's views appear more global and humanitarian. One may say that Held's goal is the same; she only looks at feminism as a necessary medium for the service of humanity. Moral philosophy takes into account development, keeps an open mind about matters that must be given thought, and consists of moral theories. MacIntyre, for instance, gives up on the idea of individual culture to shape morality. Instead, he believes in being questioning toward our moral values and to adopt a somewhat universal culture with its own particular profile of morality. Here, a candid, liberal mind is used. Held, on the other hand, discusses a feminist moral theory, not pure moral philosophy, when she expresses her opinion that moral theory must be about caring as well. Hence, based on Held's theory, there must be interdependence rather As mentioned earlier, both philosophers express their views in a style that catches attention. However, no philosopher among the two has found the other guilty of erroneous conviction. Their ideas on moral philosophy or moral theory (a part of moral philosophy) are unique and still weighty Peace is bestthis is wisest to say. Many would say that capital punishment is bad while killing in war is justified. It depends: this is my viewpoint. There are innumerable variables involved as far as killing is concerned, a moral philosopher may be aware also. Why is an individual being killed' Why is war being waged' Should the innocent be killed in war too only because of the corrupti ...

Butch and femme roles of lesbians
Butch and femme roles of lesbians Butch and femme roles were extremely important to the community in the forties and fifties; it was the butch role that was the most visible, and therefore the most likely to cause public scorn (Weissman and Fernie). The two sources, The Reproduction of Butch ââ¬â Femme Roles by Madeline Davis and Elizabeth Lapovsky Kennedy and Forbidden Love by Aerlyn Weisman and Lynne Fernie focus particularly on the function of the butch role among working class lesbians in Buffalo. These sources draw on articles, oral histories and interviews of lesbians from the early twentieth century. Both the resources state that, although ââ¬Å"gender-appropriateâ⬠styles and behaviors were rigidly enforced in order to maintain a clear distinction between the sexes, butch womenââ¬â¢s choice to not only reject traditional femininity but to also actively adopt masculinity was perceived as a threat to the very order of society and a prelude to social chaos. Despite the fear, and likelihood of haras sment by police and other straight men, the courage of butches to claim their identities in many ways prepared the way for later generations of lesbians to break free from the narrow conventions of socially constructed womanhood and claim access to a kind of power traditionally held only by men (Weisman and Fernie). As a result, male representations of lesbian sexuality have had the most influence in shaping attitudes towards butch and femme identities throughout the twentieth century. Such representations have almost always assumed the lesbian role -playing is an imitation of heterosexuality. The main theory underlying the feminist disregard of role ââ¬â playing is that roles depend on sexual difference, which is naturally hierarchical, polarizing, and oppressive. Sexual difference is the grounds on which heterosexual roles are built, and thus contains within it an inherently unequal distribution of power. In the relationship of a butch and femme, since the identities of both a re built on popular cultural stereotypes of male and female behavior, they tend to reinforce the inequality in power inherent in this dichotomy. In addition, in most cases one of the partners is active, strong, dominant, and initiating whereas the other partner is passive, weak, submissive, and enduring. The partner who is dominant in this equation mimics the role of a male in a heterosexual relationship, whereas the passive, weak and submissive characteristics belong to that of the female. Thus, because the butch- femme roles have the potential for being just as sexist as heterosexual roles, they imitate the latter, especially when talking about power relations between two partners. (Weisman and Fernie) According to Judith Roofââ¬â¢s article, ââ¬Å"The Match in the Crocus: Representations of Lesbian Sexuality,â⬠the representations of lesbian sexuality in the dominant discourse often evoke the phallus by calling attention to its absence or substitution in sexual relations between women, so that it appears and seems necessary, at least symbolically, because of the inconceivability of sexuality without a phallus present. Therefore, lesbians are often depicted as having appropriated the penis, masquerading as though they really had it, and thereby assuming male privilege and acting upon it. This evokes the stereotypical image of the lesbians by phallocentric discourse and is seemingly embraced by the lesbian community in the form of butch roles. What Roofââ¬â¢s analysis makes possible is an understanding of the ways in which the dominant ideology has a vested interest in making the butch ââ¬â femme role playing appear to be a mere replica of heterosexuality, as a way of calming male anxiety over the threat of female appropriation of male dominance. Thus, because the absence of the phallus requires them to achieve the balance through role playing, they merely are merely imitating the heterosexual norms.

Various researches prior to this suggest that the capital structure is based on corporate governance decisions. Theories suggest that the size of the firm and profitability is negatively related to the debt equity ratio of the firm. These findings are in line with the agency theory, transaction cost theory or pecking order theory. It was found that the there is a negative relationship between debt equity ratio and market to book ration in case of assets, which also reveals that it is conflicting with the agency theory. On the other hand, in European countries tangibility has a positive relationship with the choice of capital structure and it is consistent with the agency theory. Irony and Symbolism in Willa Cathers Pauls Case Essays -- Cather Pau
Irony and Symbolism in Willa Cather's Paul's Caseà "Paul's Case," by Willa Cather, is a story that deals with a young boy who does not feel that he lives a life befitting of him. Upon a close reading, it is evident that "Paul's Case" is ruled by irony and symbolism, which are apparent in the story through the words of the narrator. The irony woven throughout the text builds up to an epiphonic moment, a main paradox in the story, which reveals to the reader Paul's true nature. Paul believes that everyone around him is beneath him. He is convinced that he is superior to everyone else in his school and in his neighborhood. He is even condescending to his teachers, and shows an appalling amount of contempt for them, of which they are very aware. In one class he habitually sat with his hand shading his eyes; in another he always looked out of the window during the recitation; in another he made a running commentary on the lecture, with humorous intention. Paul wanted everyone to think he was better than they were. Not only did he try to dress as if he were rich and important, his very actions displayed a great amount of disdain for everyone around him. Paul sees himself as superior. He carries himself with a haughty countenance and air about him, apparent in the description "Paul entered the faculty room suave and smiling." His attempts to portray himself as elegant is obvious in the adornments with which he tries to accentuate his attire: "he wore an opal pin in his neatly knotted black fourin-hand, and a red carnation in his button-hole." The irony in Paul's self-delusion lies in the way he is, in reality, seen by the rest of the world. While he thinks that he is dapper and winning in his ornamented garb, t... ...ft who is actually honest. To Paul, the ultimate place in life is to be a part of the upper class. Paul had to try very hard, and be very dishonest, to convey a certain image so that he would be accepted as a part of that class. At this moment, since the best place to be is the upper class, and if one must be dishonest to achieve high social status, Paul wonders how there can be anyone in the world who is honest because everyone should be striving to be a part of the upper class. As far as Paul is concerned, his deceitful measures were an acceptable means for achieving his goal. Works Cited and Consulted Brown M. & Crone R. Willa Cather the Woman and Her Works. Strategies to Discourage Social Loafing
Strategies to discourage social loafing: Social loafing can be described as a tendency of individuals to exert less effort when they are part of a group. Since, all individuals are sharing their efforts to accomplish set goals; each member of the group contributes less than he/she would if he/she was individually accountable. One of the major reasons behind this behavior is that individuals think that they are not being acknowledged for their efforts. Such believing brings their moral down and therefore team members see no reason to reach high-level performance while working within the team. This behavior also develops when individual responsibilities within a team are not well-defined, or when management cannot track performance with precision. To correct and eliminate social loafing within the team players and to provide positive advantage to organization, the following steps can be taken. By defining clear roles and responsibilities to each team member in the beginning of the project will help each individual to achieve set goals and objectives. ââ¬â By observing each individualââ¬â¢s contribution closely. -Set up individual assignments that reflect results toward the end project. -Assign individual tasks according to his/her skill set and strengths. This approach will promote the individual to accomplish assigned tasks in an effective manner. -Employ team reviews and member evaluations on regular basis. Simplify the rol es and responsibilities for the team to follow. -Support and persuade team members with loyalty. -Provide timely feedback to each team member on assigned tasks. -Using the management by walking around method can also reduce the social loafing within the team individuals. This practice will help management obtaining a better understanding of the work being done outside as well as building relationship with employees. Similarly, team members will learn that management is coming around anytime that will reduce the possible chances of social loafing.

A Traditional Indian Culture And American Culture
Identity and Names The names we are given are essential in forming our identity. It is the way we are addressed by everyone starting from birth. It is the beginning of how we define ourselves in our own terms `as a result of growing up and experiencing life. In Indian culture, from The Namesake, the grandmother chooses a good name for the child before they are born. Gogol was supposed to be a pet name only used by family and close friends. For Gogol, his name highlights his differences to everyone else, but more importantly, himself. He endures a consistent struggle with his two cultures throughout the novel. He, as a young adult, is searching for acceptance of both his traditional Indian culture and American culture. The Namesake, explores the theme of identity by examining the differences of both cultures. He has two names and therefore two identities, Gogol and Nikhil, and throughout the novel he looks for a way to incorporate them into one whole. Naming a child following Bengali tradition is extremely different in comparison to American culture. This highlights the importance of a child finding their own way in their own time, but also allows the parents to choose the best name. When it comes to naming the child, that honor is given to an elder relative. There are always two names that a Bengali child will have: a pet name and a good name. In the case of Gogol the letter containing his names was never received and considered lost.
